THE BAND

A Day to Remember came out of Ocala, Florida and welded pop-punk hooks to metalcore breakdowns. Fronted by Jeremy McKinnon, they turned that contrast into stadium-sized songs. “The Downfall of Us All” (2009) is the one that made a generation yell the hook back — then brace for the drop.

THE GUITARISTS

Neil Westfall · rhythm, founder

The architecture. The bounce in the verses and the weight in the heavy parts both run through his right hand.

Kevin Skaff · lead

The leads and melodic top end — the parts that make the choruses soar over all that low-end punch.

WHAT IT TAKES TO PLAY IT

The trick is contrast: keep the verses bouncy and clean, then drop into the breakdown without letting the heavy part go soft. Two feels in one song, neither allowed to bleed into the other. Hearing the structure underneath the energy is the whole game (more here).
